Aurora Pisum Sativum is a mobile sculpture, the first work in an ongoing series resulting from a body of research exploring Laschamp Cycles. Aurora Pisum Sativum uses the pea plant and magnetic reversal events and their suspected impact on our history to speculate on the future and the past.

Francis Carmody’s artistic practice serves as a useful alibi to reach out to people across disciplines and technical capabilities to share stories and complete projects. Through tracing networks and natural structures, he would like to get a glimpse of where we have been and where we are going.

This process of enquiry draws on meticulous research, cold calling, persistence and frequent rejection. Creating an ever-expanding list of Project Partners and friends, including Psychics, DNA scientists, Neuroscientists, Day-Time Television Sales Specialists, Media Managers, Border Force Agents, Computational Designers, Patent Lawyers, Cartoonists, Graphic Designers, Architects, Automotive painters…

Francis Carmody is an artist based in Narrm/Melbourne. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne (2019), with a year studying Fine Arts (Hons) at Goldsmiths, University of London (2019). Recent solo exhibitions include Lost & Found Recovery, Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf, Sydney (2022) and Gateway, Blindside Gallery, Melbourne (2021). Selected group exhibitions include Exposure Site, Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne (2022), And Shuffling, Conners Conners, Melbourne (2022), Remedy for the Doldrums, Gertrude Glasshouse, Melbourne (2020), Majlis Traveling Scholarship, Fiona and Sidney Myer Gallery, The University of Melbourne, Melbourne (2019).

Francis is a 2022–2024 Gertrude Studio Artist, Gertrude Contemporary. In October, he will present a solo exhibition at Gertrude Glasshouse, Melbourne, including work from an upcoming research trip to Boston where he will undertake an additive manufacturing intensive at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA.
